Mike:

Life is constantly offering us valuable lessons, and one that holds a ton of power is realizing that our past, our yesterday, only has as much control over us as we let it. Think of yesterday like a movie. It started, it had highs and lows, and then it ended. Sometimes, this movie might not be the feel-good one we had hoped for. It might have been filled with some sadness, letdowns, and screwups. We may have made that mistake with one of our employees. We may have handled a customer problem poorly. We may have spent a s**t ton of money on a marketing campaign that failed miserably. Now, on the other hand, yesterday may have presented us with some great memories that we captured on our iPhone. Something that brought us a ton of joy that we want to hang on to forever. Maybe yesterday brought us a big unexpected order from a new customer. But here is one undeniable fact, yesterday happened, it's over. We should always replay the good scenes to make ourselves feel confident, happy, and fulfilled. On the other hand, if we failed or made some mistakes, we need to make certain we can learn from them. We cannot let these screwups take residence in our brain and drain our energy. Now, think about the baseball player that went 0-4 with 4 strikeouts. That's called a golden sombrero in the sports world. It's not a very fun hat to wear. But if that player does not internalize that yesterday is over, they may bring that s***ty experience into today's game, and that is a recipe for disaster. So here's my question for you. Are you rewatching yesterday's failures? Our past is important. It helped shape who we are today. It influenced our choices, our likes, our dislikes, and quite frankly, it brought us to where we stand right now. We can't deny its role. But think about this, if you get in your car and believe that today you can only drive on the roads that you used yesterday, would that make any sense? Just because we went one way yesterday doesn't mean we can't choose a new direction today. The past should be a place of reference, not residence. We live in a world full of choices. There's so much we can do. There's so many paths we can choose, but oftentimes we can't see them. Why? Because we're too busy looking backwards. We think our past mistakes or choices are the only routes available today. To truly move forward, we need to see the world for what it is now. We cannot let the weight of old stories hold us back. I know that this is easier said than done. Change is hard. There's no questioning that. Letting go of the past, especially parts that may have hurt, is absolutely not easy, but to start fresh, we first need to see ourselves in a new light. If we keep thinking of ourselves as the same person we were yesterday, we won't allow ourselves to grow. Everyone has the power to start over. Unfortunately, way too many entrepreneurs stick to what they know because they're scared of what they don't know. Stepping into the unknown is scary, but when you do take that step, we find out more about ourselves in the world around us. Even if things don't go as planned, we learn, adjust, and get better. Maybe we'll find out the next step wasn't right, but that's okay. We'll know now what doesn't work and what not to do next time. We grow from experiences, both good and bad. The trick is to believe that there's always something new to try. There's always something different to explore. Life keeps moving and changing. Holding on to old ways or past stories will stop us from seeing new opportunities. Sure, the known feels safe and comfortable. But remember, entrepreneurship is laced with risk. Today is a chance to open a new door. Today is a chance to look beyond what you know and try something new. We might have different backgrounds. You and I might have different resources or different challenges, but one thing is the same for every one of us. We have the power to choose our path. We have the power to make decisions. We have the power to shape our company the way we want. Now, we must respect our past for the lessons it taught us, but we cannot live there. Every new day is a gift. Every new day is an opportunity to try again, to be better, to learn more. The world is full of endless possibilities. It is up to us to see them, believe in them and take the steps needed to make them a reality. In the grand story of life, it's important to remember that while our past has shaped us, it doesn't have to define us. We have the power to write a new chapter. By focusing on today and the possibilities it holds, we can create a future that's even brighter than the past. All it takes is the courage to move forward. We must believe in ourselves. We must believe in our vision as an entrepreneur and we must embrace the present moment. So let's make the most of today. Let's celebrate our successes. Let's learn from our screwups and our mistakes and always keep looking forward because when we focus on the present, when we focus on the opportunities it offers, we can create a future that's filled with hope, happiness, and endless potential.
